This album is one of my personal faves. I have a special affinity for live albums because they separate the wheat from the chaff. It exposes a singer for what they really are–good, bad, or anything in between. This album in particular is nothing short of a great party record. Sam Cooke is like Bobby Brown in his heyday to the tenth power. He’s soulful, irreverent, and, at times, downright lewd in a 1960′s version of the Bobby Brown/Jodeci pull-ur-pants-down-while-onstage riff. You hear chicks get hot and bothered and realize at some point, these women are in their 50′s, 60′s, and maybe 70′s now. Some of the people shaking their behinds at this party prolly shake their head in disgust when they hear Gucci Mane nowadays. And to think, Gucci Mane definitely didn’t get his start in church.

I’m not here to judge, just putting it out there. Irregardless (yes, irregardless), this is a classic live album of classic soul songs by a classic soul singer. It’s timeless work from someone who’s time on Earth was far too short. Enjoy.
