Proof That Your Parents (and Grandparents) Were Nasty (Just Like You)
Posted in Throwback of the Week on February 3, 2008 by dkgiles2This album is one of my personal faves. I have a special affinity for live albums because they separate the wheat from the chaff. It exposes a singer for what they really are–good, bad, or anything in between. This album in particular is nothing short of a great party record. Sam Cooke is like Bobby Brown in his heyday to the tenth power. He’s soulful, irreverent, and, at times, downright lewd in a 1960′s version of the Bobby Brown/Jodeci pull-ur-pants-down-while-onstage riff. You hear chicks get hot and bothered and realize at some point, these women are in their 50′s, 60′s, and maybe 70′s now. Some of the people shaking their behinds at this party prolly shake their head in disgust when they hear Gucci Mane nowadays. And to think, Gucci Mane definitely didn’t get his start in church.
I’m not here to judge, just putting it out there. Irregardless (yes, irregardless), this is a classic live album of classic soul songs by a classic soul singer. It’s timeless work from someone who’s time on Earth was far too short. Enjoy.

Ace of Base – “The Sign”
This song was great because, in addition to its inherent musical greatness, there were countless juvenile versions of it sung on playgrounds everywhere to demean social rivals. Swedes are good for something.

In the spirit of diversity, signaled by the Obama win, and since Real Niggas Light Candles Vol. 2 drops today, I figured I’d keep it “ethnic” and smooth respectively for the Throwback of the Week.

Soon you’ll understand:
Am I the only one that wouldn’t mind it if KP & Envyi made a comeback? And why is “the object of desire” in this video Polow da Don? (Don’t believe me? Watch 1:24-1:36 and 2:04-2:25.) And why does Polow da Don look like a member of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony? And why is Envyi such a bad lil white girl, but not in a white girl way, in a black girl way? And why do I keep on asking you questions?
